I complain about the summer but the truth is I actually kind of love it.
Why? Because there's one beautiful gem that makes enduring the heat worth it: the ripe, in-season tomato.
And, fine, there's also the thrill of the hunt for perfect stone fruit at the farmers market. The snacks at the beach with friends. And how would my life have any variety if I wasn't forced to switch from hot to iced coffee for half the year?
Here are a few of my summer kitchen essentials, perfect for doing all of the above, all on sale now.
My favorite knife for BLTs
A few years ago, my pro baker friend turned me on to the serrated chef's knife. It's the best tool for slicing through even the softest, ripest tomatoes without crushing them. And it can easily tackle the crusty sourdough loaf for your sandwich, too.
A good cocktail shaker
Also on my list of summer essentials? A cocktail shaker. But maybe not for the reason you think. Sure, it's fun to shake a margarita, but my cocktail shaker works overtime all season to make espresso shaken over ice.
A shaken espresso is delicious because the espresso dilutes just the right amount, and it gets all frothy. For a treat, I add milk and brown sugar syrup. Get this shaker for just $10, and if you don't have an espresso machine, this handheld one works as well as machines three times its price.
Essential storage containers for picnics
I bring a set of storage containers to the farmers' market and put my berries and cherries in them to ensure that they won't get crushed on the walk home. And of course you'll need a good set for picnicking, too. Get the glass set that won our product test at a modest discount now, or the winner in the plastic container category for 16% off.
