PPQ recently participated in the North American Plant Protection Organization's (NAPPO) governance meetings. Below are key updates for U.S. stakeholders from those meetings: NAPPO's 2021 Work Program Announced NAPPO recently announced and posted its 2021 work program. APHIS-PPQ, in collaboration with its NAPPO partners, will continue to support and provide active participation in this year's program. This year's program will include several carryover projects from 2020, some of which are approaching the country consultation stage, as well as a new regional initiative on quality management/phytosanitary terminology. The work program reflects APHIS priorities to advance regional safeguarding initiatives, trade harmonization goals, and aligns with strategic areas of focus, including seed health and diagnostics, forest pests, risk-based sampling, among others. The program also includes ongoing activities that support International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) initiatives or obligations, such as pest reporting, ePhyto, and the International Year of Plant Health, which has been extended through June 2021. Upcoming Events and Activities NAPPO will hold its annual meeting virtually sometime during the first two weeks of November 2021. On course with the normal country rotation, APHIS-PPQ will host the 2021 NAPPO Annual Meeting. Interested stakeholders are encouraged to participate. Please visit the NAPPO Annual Meeting Web site for more information. NAPPO intends to launch several revised, regional standards and documents for country consultation this year. In addition, NAPPO will solicit new project proposals starting on November 15, 2021. U.S. stakeholders will be invited to work with PPQ to provide comments on draft standards up for consultation or to submit new project proposals. U.S. stakeholders are vital to the work of the IPPC and NAPPO. Your input on proposed projects, review of draft standards and documents, and participation in IPPC and NAPPO events ensures we are developing relevant standards that advance U.S. harmonization goals. Standards facilitate the safe trade of plants, plant products and other regulated articles, harmonize plant protection policies and practices among and between trading partners in North America and internationally, and provide a critical framework for addressing phytosanitary trade issues and negotiating market access requests.
