The Justice Department stated that it had arrested one of the top three leaders of MS-13, the Salvadoran-based gang, during a raid in Prince William County.

Attorney General Pam Bondi declined to release the detainee's name but called the 24-year-old suspect the "worst of the worst." He was reportedly living about 35 miles from Washington, D.C.

The arrest was part of a joint operation involving the FBI, ICE, ATF, Virginia State Police, and Prince William County police.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin praised the state's cooperation with federal authorities. "Systematically, over the last four weeks, we have gone to work. Gone to work untangling, gone to work putting together the cases, and arresting these horrific criminals. These criminals who live in our neighborhood," he said.

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is laying off workers and canceling contracts after the federal government stated that it would take back $11.4 billion in grant funding nationwide for several COVID-related programs.

"VDH is working to assess the exact impacts that these changes will have and will be communicating to affected staff and partner organizations," officials said. "The overall ongoing work of public health will continue as we navigate these changes in federal funding."

As much as $425 million of that funding supported public health projects in Virginia, including infectious disease testing and immunization programs, in addition to COVID research.
