Article Icon 1Historic Rainfall, Flooding Drench South Texas

Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration for four South Texas counties on Saturday after torrential rain led to widespread flooding that killed at least three, prompted hundreds of water rescues, and left thousands without power. Over 20 school districts canceled classes on Friday.

The initial disaster declaration included Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr and Willacy counties, though Abbott indicated other counties could be added as conditions warrant.

Harlingen received 21.5 inches of rain on Thursday and Friday, breaking a rainfall record set in 1912. Hundreds of drivers abandoned their cars in the rising floodwaters, and local farmers and ranchers suffered significant losses of crops and livestock.

One resident described the struggle to keep his belongings dry. "Things I stacked up, the rain, the water made it float, and it knocked it down. So everything got messed up, everything got ruined," he said.

About 500 U.S. Army soldiers are being deployed to the border in and around Big Bend National Park as part of the Trump administration's ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal immigration.

The troops aren't authorized to make arrests but will assist federal border agents with surveillance and intelligence gathering. An undisclosed number of 19-ton Stryker armored vehicles are also being deployed to the region.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the administration aims to "control every inch of the Southern border." He answered that "everything is on the table" when asked about invoking the 200-year-old Insurrection Act to authorize the military to perform law enforcement activities on U.S. soil.

Article Icon 1Ancient Weapons Found in West Texas Cave

Archaeologists discovered a collection of weapons thought to be 6,000 years old inside the San Esteban Rockshelter south of Marfa, making it one of the oldest such finds in North America.

Among the artifacts are components of a type of spear called an atlatl and a straight-flying boomerang. Next to the weapons, researchers found a tanned pronghorn hide and preserved human waste.

Experts believe the cave may have held spiritual significance, though the exact purpose of the deposit remains uncertain. Bryon Schroeder, director of the Center for Big Bend Studies, called the discovery a "pretty monumental finding."

"We get these incredible snapshots of life, vignettes of how they lived, what the environment was and how they responded to it," he said.
