Wild Weather, Blackbeard Suit, and Hatteras Island Women

A line of thunderstorms moving through the region today could produce severe weather, including tornadoes, and may help dampen North Carolina's wildfires, though it won't bring enough rain to put them out.

A line of thunderstorms moving through the region today could produce severe weather, including tornadoes, and may help dampen North Carolina's wildfires, though it won't bring enough rain to put them out.

As of Saturday night, the Table Rock Fire, which originated in South Carolina, had expanded to cover 12,000 acres and officially breached into Transylvania County, where 758 structures remain under a mandatory evacuation.

Other fires still burning include the 1,200-acre Rattlesnake Branch Fire in Haywood County (20% contained as of Saturday) and the 1,390-acre Alarka Five Fire in Swain County (18% contained as of Saturday).

In Polk County, the Black Cove Fire had burned 3,500 acres and was 35% contained and the Deep Woods Fire had burned 3,970 acres and was 32% contained as of Saturday afternoon. Evacuations there continue to be assessed by county officials.

Article Icon 1State Battles Blackbeard Suit

Lawyers for the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources want federal appellate judges to throw out a copyright lawsuit over images linked to Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge.

The case originated when Frederick Allen and his company, Nautilus Productions, sued the state in 2015 over the alleged unauthorized use of images and videos Allen took while the state recovered material from the ship. In 2020, the case went to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled unanimously in favor of the state.

U.S. District Judge Terrence Boyle, however, allowed Allen to amend his complaint to assert that the state's alleged copyright infringement also violated the 14th Amendment's Due Process Clause. State attorneys now want the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to send the case back to Boyle with instructions to "dismiss and close" it.

Top-seeded Duke men's basketball breezed through an Elite Eight matchup against Alabama Saturday night, winning 85-65 to advance to their first Final Four under coach John Scheyer and 18th overall. The Blue Devils will face Houston in the semifinals on April 5 in San Antonio, Texas.

Meanwhile, the No. 2 seed Duke women's basketball team defeated in-state rival UNC Friday with a 47-38 Sweet 16 win to advance to an Elite Eight matchup against No. 1 South Carolina on Sunday. However, the Blue Devils fell short of the Final Four, losing 54-50 to the Gamecocks.

No. 3 seed LSU eliminated No. 2 seed NC State in Sweet 16 play Friday with an 80-73 win over the Wolfpack.
