Brita Horn, a former Routt County treasurer, was elected to serve as the next chair of the Colorado GOP in its biennial reorganization meeting in Colorado Springs on Saturday.

Horn won 53% of the final vote over former Weld County Commissioner Lori Saine. She replaces Dave Williams, who declined to run for reelection following a controversial two-year term.

Earlier this year, Williams and the Colorado GOP sued Horn and other detractors for allegedly orchestrating a failed "coup" to remove Williams as chairman.

Horn stressed a desire to move past the infighting that's consumed the state GOP, vowing to unite the party as Republicans prepare for several statewide elections in 2026.

The family of Donald "Donnie" Young, a Denver detective killed in 2005, is speaking out after their father's killer applied for a program that could grant him early parole.

Raul Gomez-Garcia, an MS-13 gang member, was sentenced to 80 years in prison for Young's murder. Because he was under 21 at the time of the crime, he now qualifies for a state program that could allow him to seek parole after three years of participation.

Young's daughters, joined by the former Denver District Attorney, have urged lawmakers to reject his application and amend the law to exclude violent offenders.

Unless the law is revised, Gomez-Garcia could reapply for parole every three years if denied.

Starting in April, Colorado State Patrol (CSP) will ticket anyone pulled over and found not wearing a seat belt to get Colorado drivers—and teenagers in particular—to buckle up.

According to CSP, drivers aged 16-21 were at fault for more than 300 crashes it investigated in March 2024. Additionally, only 88% of Colorado drivers wear seat belts—lagging behind the national average of 92%.

To encourage seat belt use in younger motorists, CSP is launching its "Buckle Like A Boss" campaign, which will run until August.

CSP hopes the campaign will prevent fatal crashes, help younger and new drivers make better decisions, and remind everyone on the road that Colorado is a zero-tolerance state for not wearing seat belts.
