| Looking at a stormy sea during the Dorsett-Morse Agricultural Expedition | | In February 1929, two USDA plant explorers, Palemon H. Dorsett and William J. Morse, set sail for Asia to study soybeans, protein rich legumes of potential value as a US crop. They explored the cultivation, harvest, and processing of this crop which would become a major component of American agriculture. The explorers sent specimens to the United States for further investigation and to develop promising varieties suited for US production. The expedition not only resulted in advancements in the American soybean industry, but produced documentary journals and photograph collections giving us a glimpse into the cultures of Japan, Korea, and China from 1929 to 1932. Learn more about this remarkable expedition, and browse selected photos, in this Special Collections' exhibit. | | | |
