Monthly Review - January Edition ❄️

Hi nameq,

Welcome back to the Sally's Baking Addiction monthly newsletter!

Happy 2021, bakers! The start of a new year brings resolutions, motivation, and a refreshing start for the months ahead. One of my goals for 2021 is to make more homemade yeasted bread from scratch, like this artisan bread and our new recipe for soft multigrain bread. Our team has many exciting projects for the website planned for this year. And, of course, we plan to keep providing new and exciting content on Sally's Baking Addiction! Let's take a look at some of January's highlights:

Reader Favorite Recipe from January πŸ’—

Small Chocolate Cake (6 Inch)

This recipe received the most page views in January.

This was a new recipe published this month! Over the past year, we've received many requests for smaller variations of normally large desserts. So it's no surprise that this 1 layer 6 inch chocolate cake has been such a hit. It's perfect for date night, a Valentine's Day dessert, a small family birthday celebration, or for whenever you need a scaled down cake. We love it with chocolate ganache on top. You can also use this chocolate cake batter to make a small batch of cupcakes.

"This was a great small version of your already amazing chocolate cakes! It was rich and delicious like the rest of them and super easy to make."

January Baking Challenge Update

The January Baking Challenge recipe is Homemade Stromboli.

Tomorrow is the last day to join the January Baking Challenge. See "How to Join Sally's Baking Challenge" below the recipe for details.

I publish a new baking challenge recipe every month. The February Baking Challenge is coming on Monday. Hint: A fancy chocolate dessert.

Two readers said:

"This recipe for homemade Stromboli is so good, and the different combinations for fillings are endless. I've used this dough to make pizza many times. It's easy to work with and forgiving. Love it!"
- Deb

"This was a great recipe and the step-by-step tips and tricks (along with the video) made it super easy to follow along. It's also a great recipe because there are so many options for flavors/fillings that you can come up with and there's no wrong choice."
- Kellie

Here's What You've Been Baking

I love seeing Sally's Baking Addiction recipes in your own kitchen. Be sure to tag @sallysbakeblog on Instagram so I can see what you're baking.

And here's what I've been making: Homemade Buttermilk Biscuits. I always appreciate that this is a quick recipe from start to finish, which is why we make them so often. (Great for young bakers to help!) You don't have to chill the dough or wait too long for them to cool before digging in. The dough uses basic ingredients so it's an easy recipe for anyone who craves fresh bread, but doesn't want to work with yeast. You can enjoy them with dinner and/or breakfast. Fun flavors include these everything biscuits and cheddar biscuits.

New Quick Video Tutorials

You asked and we listened! While we always include detailed step-by-step directions and photos for every new recipe we publish, we know how helpful it can be to actually watch a recipe come together on video. Our team has been hard at work updating older recipes with helpful new video tutorials and our goal is to add more each month. Here's what we've added in January so far:

Recipe Reviews πŸŽ‰

Thank you so much for taking the time to rate recipes on Sally's Baking Addiction. Here's a few I enjoyed reading:

Classic Lemon Meringue Pie

"I've made other lemon meringue pies in the past but this recipe was by far the best! I love that you provided pictures, video, and solid details on every step. Even for someone with experience in lemon meringue, you did things differently than I have in the past and I will never go back! Thank you for putting this out there for others. It's wonderful."
- Kristen

Rosemary Garlic Pull Apart Bread

"Thank you for this wonderful recipe! My family and I had some fresh rosemary and decided to use it on this bread. I was so scared of yeast in the past. I had planned on giving some of it away but those plans are no more as we can't quit eating this bread!"
- Erica

Chocolate Sugar Cookies

"These cookies are delicious! We like the way the dark chocolate balances the royal icing (which was also your recipe and worked out great). I have not ever chilled the rolled dough before cutting out cookies but will always do this method- no spreading, my bears looked like bears. Have never used royal icing to make "artsy" cookies and I am so pleased how they turned out. Thanks for all the tips!"
- Teri

Favorite Baking Tool from January

A loaf pan. Loaf pans certainly get a workout in the kitchen. You can bake everything from banana bread and lemon poppy seed bread to pound cake and small batch cheesecake. They're also great for yeast breads like sandwich bread and garlic pull apart bread. If you need a recommendation, I have a couple favorites I use on the regular. You can find all of my recommended pans included on my Favorite Baking Pans page.

Last Year in February

Monday marks the beginning of February with at least 4 new recipes on the horizon! If you just can't wait, here are a few recipes I published last February:
