Men Have Eating Disorders, Too. Why Don't They Seek Help?

Public discussions about eating disorders tend to focus on women, and in the past, so have our episodes on the subject. But millions of men also struggle with some form of disordered eating, though they're far less likely to be diagnosed or seek treatment. Today we hear stories from three men—in three different stages of life—who have complicated relationships with food. The common thread? All three of them want to share their experiences so that other men who are struggling don't feel so alone. We also talk with Dr. Roberto Olivardia, an eating disorder expert, about why men don't seek help and how diet culture affects them.

WHAT WE'RE EATING

- I'm eating dal with mango pickle.

- Emma is eating frozen waffles with plain yogurt, macadamia honey nut butter, and berries.

- Andres spatchcocked a chicken for the first time, and is eating roast chicken with shmaltzy potatoes.

- Tracey is eating honey sriracha chicken wings (as an incentive to watch football).

WHAT WE'RE READING

- I'm reading validation of my long-held belief that Pro Tools, the audio editing software of choice in the podcasting industry, is a piece of garbage

- Emma is reading an interview with the filmmaker Mira Nair in The New Yorker.

- Andres is reading about the flavor that helped food writer Tejal Rao get her sense of taste back.

- Tracey is reading A Swim In A Pond In The Rain by George Saunders.

Take care,
Dan
