Webinars on UKCA mark and welding fume and metalworking fluids

SHEP (Safety and Health in Engineering Partnership) are running two webinars to help businesses address these important issues:

  • Understanding and using the new UKCA & UKNI marks
    Thursday, 25 February (12.00 – 1.00pm)

The webinar seeks to clarify the legal requirements so that companies know when and how to apply these new marks and when the EU CE mark still applies.

Guidance is available on the HSE website.

  • Welding fume and metalworking fluid
    Tuesday, 9 March (12.00 – 1.00pm)

This webinar is designed to improve your ability to manage the health hazards from welding fume and metalworking fluids. HSE plans to inspect engineering premises from May to September 2021 focussing on these health hazards.

Guidance is available on HSE's website for both metalworking fluids and welding.

HSE spot checks and inspections continue during national lockdown

With the increase in the number of coronavirus cases and the national lockdown restrictions now in place, all businesses that continue to operate must ensure their workplace is COVID-secure.

To protect workers, visitors and customers, employers must make sure that everyone is following the measures that have been put in place to manage the risks from coronavirus.

During lockdown, HSE will continue to carry out spot checks and inspections on businesses and will be increasing the number of calls and visits to check COVID-secure measures have been implemented in accordance with government guidance.

During the calls and visits, HSE provides advice and guidance to manage risk and protect workers and visitors, but where businesses are not managing this, we will take immediate action.

Please ensure your workplace is safe by following the guidance on being COVID-secure. Further information on spot checks and inspections is available on our website.

Ventilation and air conditioning during the pandemic

COVID-19

The law requiring employers to ensure an adequate supply of fresh air in the workplace has not changed during the pandemic.

Good ventilation, together with social distancing, keeping your workplace clean and frequent hand washing, can help reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus.

HSE's updated ventilation and air conditioning guidance will help you identify poorly ventilated areas of your workplace and provides steps to take to improve ventilation. It will apply in most workplaces and includes guidance on:

  • balancing ventilation with keeping people warm
  • identifying poorly ventilated areas
  • how to improve ventilation
  • ventilation in vehicles

Keeping safe in winter weather

winter weather

Slips and trips accidents are especially frequent at this time of year.

With low temperatures and less daylight, winter can make surfaces perilous, and slip and trip accidents increase significantly.

There are plenty of seasonal factors to consider when avoiding these sorts of accidents. Poor lighting, excess water from rain and even gritting can all cause problems.

Take a look at our online guide to avoiding slips and trips in winter weather
