Hi reader,
We have this big, four-month white board calendar hanging in our front room where we write down everything that's going on with the family. To give you a glimpse into my Type-A personality, it's even color-coded. :)
- Black is generic (i.e. the months, days, holidays, etc.)
- Green is family (i.e. Mimi and PopPop are visiting, we're traveling for Spring break, etc.)
- Purple is kids (i.e. dentist appointments, basketball practice, birthday parties, etc.)
Well, I got a text a couple weeks ago from a fellow basketball mom, letting me know that the coach had added a practice during the holiday break.
I wrote the practice on the board (as usual, otherwise I forget) and when I took a step back, I realized that there are purple notes EVERYWHERE.
I am not joking - not a single week goes by without multiple purple marks on various days!
And it's because of those purple marks that I've learned to be efficient in the kitchen.
It's not a want. It's a need.
- If I don't have a meal plan filled with fast recipes, I'll be late (or miss) games and practices.
- If I don't cook dinner quickly, my family won't eat until 8pm at night.
- If I don't work efficiently in the kitchen, I won't ever get ahead (at least not during the school year!).
I asked some readers why THEY want to be efficient in the kitchen, and the responses really hit home. Maybe you can relate to some of them?
As a Cancer patient I want to learn how to get shortcuts so I can spend more time with my family.

I need to find a work-around to my aversion to meal planning.

I need to get real meals on the table in a shorter amount of time.
When meals take an extreme amount of time to prepare I start to lose interest and out comes the boxes of spaghetti and mac & cheese!
- Gretchen
My financial goal for 2021 is to significantly lower our food spending while still eating healthy, real foods - and I need more quick meals that my kids love!
- Christina
I am hoping for healthy quick recipes that my husband will also eat and help us to maintain our weight loss journey.

PS - I created 30 Minute Dinners because I saw other families struggling to get a healthy dinner on the table quickly. I wasn't expecting my meal plans to help them save money, lose weight, and eat more vegetables too!
