The following Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) reports were released on Thursday, January 21, 2021.

   

Bulgaria: FAIRS Country Report
 

Bulgaria acceded to the European Union (EU) in 2007 and follows EU food directives, standards, and regulations. This report outlines applicable legislation regarding U.S. food-product exports to Bulgaria, particularly those rules which differ from EU legislation. This report should be read in conjunction with the U.S. Mission to the EU's (USEU) Office of Agricultural Affairs' (OAA) EU FAIRS 2020 report.


Bulgaria: FAIRS Export Certificate Report

As a European Union (EU) Member State, Bulgaria applies EU regulatory requirements for all animal- and plant-origin food and agricultural imports. Bulgarian regulatory authorities may be consulted, on a case-by-case basis, regarding import requirements for some categories of non-harmonized products. 


China: China Lowers Applied MFN Tariff Rates and Revises Out of Quota TRQ Rates

On December 23, 2020, the State Council Tariff Commission (SCTC) announced its annual tariff adjustment plan that sets tentative import and export tariff rates for select tariff lines in 2021. In this announcement, China lowered the tentative tariff rates for certain dairy products, certain wood products and made changes to the calculation for out-of-quota cotton tariff rates. The tentative tariff rates are applicable to tariff lines from all exporting countries. This report contains an unofficial translation of the SCTC notice and the list of agriculture-related tariff lines subject to tentative applied MFN tariff rate changes in 2021.


India: FSSAI Clarifies Food Product Categories That Qualify for Default Insecticide Tolerance Limits

The Government of India's Food Safety and Standards Authority published a clarification to the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011, that all agricultural food products and associated processed food categories that do not have fixed insecticide maximum residue levels will have a default limit of 0.01 mg/kg. The clarification notes that the default limit does not apply to thermally and chemically processed foods.


Germany: Opportunities for Organic Exports to Germany

Germany is the second largest organic market in the world with good prospects for U.S. organic products, such as tree nuts, fruits and vegetables, and processed food products. This report sets out information on the German organic market, including best prospects, and opportunities such as participation in BioFach eSPECIAL, the world's largest organic trade fair, taking place online February 17 – 19, 2021.

 

Norway: Overview of Wine and Beer Sales by Vinmonopolet in 2020

This report contains a brief analysis of the Norwegian wine monopoly's (Vinmonopolet's) sales of wine and beer in calendar year 2020. From January until November 2020, U.S. exports of wine and beer to Norway totaled $13.7 million, 25.2 percent higher than during the same period in 2019.


Pakistan: Grain and Feed Update

Pakistan's marketing year (MY) (May-April ) 2020/21 wheat production estimate is revised downward from 25.7 to 25.2 million metric tons (MMT), in accordance with the latest official data. Reports from the field suggest a four-percent increase in the wheat planted area for the MY 2021/22 crop. Pakistan's wheat imports for the current MY are expected to be around 2 million metric tons (MMT). Pakistan exported around 3.8 MMT of rice during MY (November-October) 2019/20. The Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) Pakistan has filed an application against India's bid to obtain exclusive Geographical Indication (GI) tag for basmati rice in the European Union (EU).
