Jordan: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual

On March 8, 2020, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan's cabinet of ministers approved the regulation, "Instructions for Handling Food and Food Products Originating from Genetically Modified Substances Produced by Modern Biotechnology for 2018," which was published in Jordan's Official Gazette on April 3, 2020. The new regulation supports the free movement and import clearance of food and agricultural products, while protecting consumer choice. However, the measure remains subject to further regulatory development. Jordan must promulgate implementing regulations covering trade in genetically engineered (GE) products, further build its laboratory capacity to sample test living modified organisms (LMOs) at greater scale, as well as a notification mechanism to administer its policies.

Mexico: Mexico Adds Native Varieties to the National Catalogue of Plant Varieties

On July 7, 2024, the Government of Mexico (GOM) announced an update for registrations in the National Catalogue of Plant Varieties to include "native varieties." According to the GOM announcement about the update, the purpose of the change is to officially recognize and protect indigenous plant resources. This report provides an unofficial translation of the GOM announcement.

South Korea: Exporter Guide Annual

As the fifth largest country export market for the United States, Korea provides a promising market for U.S. agricultural products. In 2023, Korea imported about $47 billion agricultural & related products from all over the world and the U.S. supplied a fifth of it, ranking number one. Other key suppliers were China, Australia, Brazil, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Korea's overall agricultural imports are forecast to have limited growth this year partly due to decreased demand from local retail and food service industries, weakened Korean currency against the U.S. dollar, and global inflation of food prices over the last couple of years. However, U.S. food and agricultural products will continue to be competitive in this market in the long run considering extended consumer interests in quality, safety, and sustainability.

Ukraine: FAIRS Country Report Annual

Ukraine continuously enforces food safety regulations for commercial imports with very few exceptions, despite Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine which began in February 2022. This report explains the existing regulatory landscape, including new regulations adopted throughout 2023 and early 2024 under the European Union regulatory approximation agenda. New regulations related to geographical indications, novel foods, and materials intended for contact with food products are included. The report also contains a new list of technical regulations for food products. This report updates the corresponding sections and adds references to recently submitted FAIRS subject reports, which explain these new regulations in greater detail.
