Everyone knows Saint Patrick's Day is the time of the year for celebrating Irish heritage and culture. The legend is that Saint Patrick, in bringing Christianity to Ireland, demonstrated the three parts of the Catholic faith with the three-leafed shamrock, and as a result, Ireland associated its green color very strongly with their culture and heritage. As Irish immigrants have spread around the world, Saint Patrick's Day has become a time to celebrate life and joy, often by throwing parties with friends and family and eating and drinking together.
The most popular Irish dish to eat on Saint Patrick's Day in America is Corned Beef and Cabbage. This began as a tradition by Irish immigrants because these were inexpensive ingredients and immigrants often did not have much money, in fact, back in Ireland, pork was a more popular meat because it was the less expensive ingredient in the homeland. Nowadays, even the non-Irish cook corned beef and cabbage on Saint Patty's as a tribute to the traditions of the early immigrants. Look below for a few variations on these corned beef and cabbage dishes, as well as some other Saint Patrick's Day favorites!
