Trump Maintains Lead, RFK Jr. Stays on Ballot

A North Carolina poll released Thursday by CBS 17/Emerson College/The Hill puts former President Donald Trump one point ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris in the race for president—49% to 48%. The remaining 3% are undecided.

North Carolina is one of seven key swing states that could determine the election.

Meanwhile, the state Board of Elections ruled Thursday that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will stay on the state’s ballot, since over half the state’s counties have already begun printing absentee ballots, the first of which will be sent out Sept. 6.

The Harris-Walz campaign also made news Thursday when Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, attended an invitation-only fundraiser in Raleigh, also attended by Gov. Roy Cooper.

Public University DEI Changes Due Sept. 1

North Carolina’s 16 public universities and the North Carolina School of Science and Math have until Sunday, Sept. 1 to submit reports outlining how they will comply with the UNC System’s repeal of diversity, equity, and inclusion requirements.

Each report must include information about job cuts or spending reductions made as a result of the policy, along with how money saved will be spent on improving student success.

UNC-Wilmington, UNC-Charlotte, and Appalachian State University completely closed their DEI offices. NCSU, UNC School of the Arts, UNC-Asheville, and ECU will reorganize and rename theirs.

Copper Earring Linked to Lost Colony

A small copper earring unearthed during a summer 2023 archaeological dig has been scientifically linked to North Carolina’s Lost Colony.

The Madison Accelerator Laboratory at James Madison University determined the earring—found among shards of pottery—was made with European copper rather than North American copper.

Guided by Sir Walter Raleigh, English Colonists arrived in Manteo in July 1587 and are believed to have befriended an Algonquian tribe.

They likely offered the earring as a gift or as part of a trade. Native tribes considered copper rare and cherished such gifts.
