NOTE TO MEDIA: IHR Review Committees for COVID-19 and mpox

Click here Thursday, 27 July 2023 NOTE TO MEDIA: IHR Review Committees for COVID-19 and mpox The International Health Regulations (2005) Review Committees for COVID-19 and mpox, convened by the WHO Director-General under the IHR, are meeting today, Thursday 27 July 2023. When the World Health Organization Director-General declared the end of the Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) for COVID -19 pandemic, and then the multi-country mpox outbreak, in May 2023, he issued sets of temporary recommendations for both diseases, expiring at the beginning of next month (August 2023). During their last meetings, the Emergency Committees advising the WHO DG on the COVID-19 and mpox PHEIC, expressed the views that the WHO DG should issue Standing Recommendations, provided for under the IHR, to address the long-term management of COVID-19 and of mpox. The DG decided that the issuance of Standing Recommendations for both diseases is warranted and to that effect, in accordance with IHR provisions, is convening Review Committees tasked to provide their views and technical advice with respect to proposed Standing Recommendations. These Standing Recommendations will cover the same period as WHO’s strategic plans: the COVID-19 Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan 2023-2025 and the global strategy for elimination and control of mpox 2023-2027. Since entry into effect of the IHR in 2007, this is the first time that the DG is issuing Standing Recommendations, which are intended to be implemented by States Parties to the IHR.  The DG is convening two committees, one for each disease, but they are comprised of the same membership, and are meeting consecutively today, 27 July. After their meetings, also on 27 July, the Review Committees will be meeting with Member States and other stakeholders as mandated by the IHR. The full reports of both Review Committees as well as the DG Standing Recommendations are expected to be published next week and will be shared with the media once issued.
