Heat-Sick Hikers, Stuck Paraglider Rescued

Phoenix fire crews rescued a family of 11 after some in the group suffered heat exhaustion while hiking Sunday on a South Mountain trail that was posted as closed due to the day's extreme heat.

Earlier in the day, fire crews responded to North Mountain to rescue a paraglider who was stuck on a power line.

A third rescue involved a 55-year-old man who suffered heat exhaustion while hiking Dreamy Draw Park.

On South Mountain, the family began its hike about 10 a.m. and, by noon, the heat overwhelmed some of the youth. Firefighters used rapid cooling and carried down two children using a rescue basket. All were treated at the scene.

First-Round NHL Pick a First for Arizona State

Arizona State freshman hockey player Cullen Potter made school history as the first Sun Devil ever selected in the first round of the NHL Draft.

Potter was chosen 32nd overall by the Calgary Flames after a strong freshman season with 13 goals and nine assists in 25 games.

Potter is set to return to ASU for his sophomore season, but he could be called up to the minors or join the Flames as the organization sees fit.

Potter, 18, comes from hockey royalty. His mom, Jenny, is a four-time Olympian and Hall of Famer, and his dad, Rob, played for the University of Minnesota.

Value of High School Diploma Grows

A study ranked Arizona first in wage growth for jobs requiring only a high school diploma, with the yearly median pay jumping 12.3% to $45,320 in 2023.

The state outperformed runners-up Utah (up 11%), Nevada (10.3%), Nebraska (9.8%), and North Carolina (9%).

The study also looked at where the value of a high school diploma goes the farthest, with North Dakota, Wyoming, and Washington, D.C., leading that list.
