Atlanta's Crime Rate Drops

Atlanta officials are highlighting a roughly 32% drop in homicides in 2025 compared to 2024, with overall crime down 9%.

The city attributes the decline in crime to improved policing, youth programs, community engagement, and strong collaboration.

"APD is not having an issue hiring officers like they did two years ago," said Atlanta city councilman Antonio Lewis. "So we've been able to, for three years, see consistent rates of all crime stats going down."

The Atlanta Police Department plans to recruit 600 new officers within the next three years, aiming to have 450 of them actively serving by the time Atlanta hosts the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

Increased Numbers of West Nile Virus in Mosquitoes

An additional number of mosquitoes in Atlanta have tested positive for West Nile virus, leading Fulton County health officials to increase mosquito control efforts and urge residents to take precautions.

Earlier this month, West Nile virus was found in mosquitoes in two locations across Fulton County.

The state reported 53 human cases in 2024, including 17 in Fulton County—a notable increase from previous years. Georgia was one of 10 states in the U.S. to record over 50 human cases last year.

Although most people who are infected by the virus do not experience symptoms, it can cause flu-like symptoms and, in rare cases, lead to severe neurological complications or death.

PeachFest Kicks Off in Atlanta Today

The 11th annual PeachFest is set to take place today at Peachtree Center in downtown Atlanta.

This summertime event celebrates Georgia's iconic fruit by bringing together more than 65 chefs, mixologists, artisans, and farmers to create unique peach-inspired dishes and drinks.

The festival also features tasting stations, immersive food and drink experiences, a silent auction, and more.

Doors open for general admission at 4 p.m.
