Argentina: Livestock and Products Annual

Argentine beef exports in 2025 are projected at a record 860,000 tons, carcass weight equivalent (cwe) as beef production is forecast to increase marginally. A larger herd and abundant calf crops 2 to 3 years ago are expected to support a slightly higher cattle slaughter. China is expected to continue to be the top export destination (measured in volume), but beef exports to the United States are forecast to remain strong given the import demand and Argentina's current competitive prices. Domestic beef consumption is touching a record low as less expensive poultry and pork continue to gain on beef's share.

European Union: EU Strategic Dialogue Charts a Course for the Future of EU Agriculture

On September 4, 2024, a working group consisting of 29 European stakeholders released its report on the "Strategic Dialogue on the Future of EU Agriculture" following seven months of intensive consultations. The report assesses the challenges and provides guidelines for fostering economically profitable, environmentally sustainable, and socially responsible agriculture, food systems, and rural areas in the EU. Key recommendations include strengthening farmers' positions in the food value chain, enhancing sustainable farming practices, reducing GHG emissions, and promoting sustainability in trade policy. European Commission President von der Leyen announced that the report will inform her new roadmap on the "Vision for Agriculture and Food" which will be delivered within the first 100 days of her second mandate.

European Union: President von der Leyen Nominates New EU Commissioners

On September 17, 2024, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled her list of EU Commissioners-designate for 2024-2029. Christophe Hansen from Luxembourg is the Commissioner-Designate for Agriculture and Food, Olivรฉr Vรกrhelyi from Hungary is the Commissioner-Designate for Health and Animal Welfare, and Jessika Roswall from Sweden is the Commissioner-Designate for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy.

Mexico: Grain and Feed Update

The outlook for Mexican grain production in marketing year (MY) 2024/2025 is higher year-on-year for corn, rice, and sorghum based on higher-than-average precipitation and a gradual recovery from exceptional drought conditions. Corn and rice imports are forecast lower year-on-year based on increased production from improved weather conditions. Mexico's wheat imports are estimated higher due to less than average expected production. Meanwhile, sorghum imports are forecast stable due to higher production and steady demand. Production and trade forecasts were revised based on updated planting, harvest, and trade data.

Netherlands: Minister Presents Plan to Address Dutch Manure Situation

On September 13, 2024, The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security, and Nature presented a plan to address the Dutch manure crisis. This crisis is caused by the (gradual) loss of a Dutch manure derogation under the Nitrate Directive (EU Council Directive 91/676/EEC), and has posed significant difficulties for farmers, while incurring high costs. The plan presents long-term and short-term solutions on national and EU level, outlined in this report. The Dutch Agricultural and Horticultural Organization (LTO) raised serious concerns about the manure crisis plan, calling it "substantively indefensible" and criticizing the lack of immediate relief for farmers.

Turkiye: Livestock and Products Annual

In 2025, Turkiye's cattle inventories are projected to fall by 4 percent, reaching 15 million head. The dairy cattle population is expected to continue its downward trend in 2025 due to increased cow slaughters driven by low farmgate prices for raw milk. In 2024, total cattle imports are estimated at 550,000 head, down 32 percent from 2023. The 2024 estimate assumes that imports will be mostly feeder cattle because of the government's support of the feeder cattle industry. Unfortunately, while U.S. live cattle exports to Turkiye were set to see a record year in 2024, following the discovery of HPAI in some lactating dairy cattle herds in the United States, Turkiye placed a ban on imports of live cattle from the US in April 2024. For 2024, beef imports are expected to reach a record 80,000 MT, 131 percent higher than the previous year, due to low domestic production and in an effort to regulate beef prices at slaughterhouses.
