NYC Mayor Indicted in Bribery Probe

New York City Mayor Eric Adams was indicted Thursday on federal charges of accepting bribes and illegal campaign contributions from foreign sources, becoming the first sitting mayor in city history to face such charges.

Prosecutors allege Adams engaged in "long-running" corruption dating back nearly a decade, including accepting free travel and luxury accommodations from Turkish officials.

Adams vowed to stay in office and fight the charges, calling himself a "target" in a case "based on lies."

The indictment follows months of escalating investigations, including searches of top aides' homes, device seizures, and resignations of Adams' police commissioner and schools chancellor amid mounting scrutiny. Here’s a timeline of the probe.

Hurricane Helene Threatens Historic Damage

Hurricane Helene was expected to deliver devastating impacts across the southeastern U.S., with forecasters warning it could become a "once-in-a-generation storm."

Meteorologists caution that damaging wind gusts of 65-75 mph could reach well into Georgia and parts of South Carolina, while 8-16 inches of rain may trigger dangerous flooding and mudslides in the southern Appalachians.

Helene Throws MLB Playoffs a Curve

Major League Baseball postponed the final two New York Mets-Atlanta Braves games until Monday due to Hurricane Helene, significantly impacting the playoff race.

The National League playoffs are scheduled to start Wednesday, with the Mets leading by one game and the Arizona Diamondbacks a half-game ahead of the Braves for the final wild-card spot.

The playoff picture for the rest of the league is clearer as the Milwaukee Brewers, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Guardians, Los Angeles Dodgers, Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros, and San Diego Padres have all secured spots in the postseason.
