State Fair Gun Ban Goes to Texas Supreme Court

Attorney General Ken Paxton took his legal fight against the Texas State Fair’s firearms ban to the Texas Supreme Court, arguing that fair officials don’t have the right to “nullify” state law by barring guns.

Two lower courts previously denied Paxton’s appeal, filed after the State Fair announced new security measures that included a complete ban on guests bringing guns to the event.

Paxton’s appeal argues the rule violates state law, which permits licensed gun holders to carry in places owned or leased by government bodies. Fair officials say the rule “is just a measure to create a further family-friendly atmosphere.”

Austin-Bergstrom Airport Expanding

The Austin City Council approved a major expansion of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport that will nearly double its size by 2030.

Projects include a new 20-gate concourse, a new arrivals and departures hall, a new parking garage, and an expanded curbside drop-off area.

Work has already begun on expanding one of three TSA checkpoints and building a new outbound baggage handling system.

The estimated $4 billion “Journey With AUS” plan is being funded by FAA grants, airport revenues, bonds, and reserves.

3D-Printed Hotel Going Up in Marfa

The world’s first 3D-printed hotel is being built in Marfa by the owner of the existing El Cosmico hotel and campground there in partnership with Austin-based 3D printing company ICON.

The crane-sized Vulcan printer stands 15.5 feet tall, is 46.5 feet wide, and weighs 4.75 tons, while the “ink” is a proprietary cement-based material called Lavacrete.

The architects say the technology allows them to make curved walls and to experiment with more organic forms and shapes.

The project is part of a 60-acre expansion that will include 43 hotel rooms and 18 residences. ICON is the same company also working on a 3D-printed neighborhood in the Austin suburb of Georgetown.
