Should You Buy an Internet-Famous Toaster? |
When I posted on my Instagram story that I was testing the Balmuda Toaster, I got a flood of responses along the lines of, "OMG, the Emily Mariko toaster!" "I've wanted it; it looks so cool!" "I love the mini water cup!" Balmuda may just be selling a toaster, but there's no denying the lifestyle that the toaster embodies online. It's an alluring little machine, regularly found in the enviably clean and spacious kitchens of influencers like Mariko, who create content that somehow manages to feel aspirational, achievable, and comfortably bland all at once. If you buy the toaster, you might have a salmon recipe go viral too. Or at the very least, you can eat a piece of perfectly crisp avocado toast in a sun-drenched rattan-clad dining room without a care in the world. I was eager to find out whether the Balmuda delivered on its steam-filled promises of better, more flavorful toast, or if it was just a load of hot air—so I tested it.
