The Swedish Torch Is the Best Way to Start a Fire This summer, skip all the pain of building a campfire and use a Swedish torch. The Swedish torch is simply a stout log with perpendicular cuts or drilled holes along the top and sides. Thanks to the cuts, the fire burns within the log rather than on the outside. The cuts allow for air circulation, which makes the fire burn more efficiently—one Swedish torch normally burns for two to three hours.
To start your fire, simply stick a bit of burning something into the hole or cut on the side, and the air circulation from the cuts takes care of the rest. As the fire grows, it maintains a tight vertical flame that gradually expands outward to the rest of the log. Once the log has burned itself in half, you can then add more logs on top of the already blazing fire and keep it going as long as you'd like.
When I witnessed the magic of the Swedish torch for the first time, it humbled me. I stared into the jet of fire, utterly förbluffad. This camping season, I hope you do, too. —Wilder Davies More Tools We Love When you buy something through our retail links, we earn an affiliate commission. This e-mail was sent to you by epicurious.
