July 29, 2021 No. 43 In time for National Friendship Day on August 1, we're reigniting all the lost connections from the last year. From outdoor playdates to easy sundae parties, we're finding new ways to just be together. Hug a friend today! —Thao
The second kids walk through the door, a tornado of stuff gets hurled everywhere — most likely landing on the floor right at the entrance. In an instant, chaos and clutter consume one of the most important spaces of the home. After all, the humble entryway sets the tone for a house. It's the first impression you make on guests, and wouldn't you rather say, "Welcome to the Griffins" than "Enter at Your Own Risk?" Plus, you want to feel calm and safe entering your house, not stressed and overwhelmed.
The solution: a well-designed entryway. Now we're not saying you have to have built-in farmhouse style cubbies to achieve order (but if you can, they're great!). A Shaker peg rail or hooks with bins work in just about any space. Each is chock-full of great storytelling and stunning art. eat

cubby finds: cacti ask maxwell My son is starting school this year — hurrah! He's a little nervous, so I'm hopeful you have some suggestions on fun back-to-school rituals to get him excited again? —Andrea Dear Andrea,
Nervousness around big changes like this is totally natural and it also means that your son has a healthy regard for what is about to happen. Assuming that he's not battling learning disabilities (as my daughter was), which can sneak up and really make school daunting, or that class is full of little bullies, which I have no solution for, let's just step back and see what we can do for a child that's nervous about a big new exciting challenge. Maxwell Ryan is a father and was an elementary school teacher in NYC before founding Apartment Therapy. He'd love to answer your question: askmaxwell@cubbyathome.com
