Identifying babies born with birth defects can help them receive the care and support they need. WHO, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Surveillance and Research will launch a new toolkit - Birth defects surveillance: a manual for programme managers and Birth defects surveillance: quick reference handbook of selected congenital anomalies to support countries to improve global birth defects tracking. Join the event on 2 December from 15h00-17h00 CET. Contact: cdrysdale@who.int Webinar on the global estimates of the need for rehabilitation The webinar will present key findings from the Global estimates of the need for rehabilitation based on the Global Burden of Disease study 2019 paper published in The Lancet. The estimates highlight the importance of rehabilitation as a key strategy for Universal Health Coverage. They also challenge the thinking that rehabilitation is a fallback strategy when preventive, promotive or curative interventions fail, or that rehabilitation is a disability-specific service needed only by a minority of the population. Participants will also discuss the broader implications that this study has on the rehabilitation field. Join WHO's Director-General and other experts at the webinar on Wednesday, 2 December from 14:00 – 15:00 CET. Register for the event. Thursday, 3 December International Day of Persons with Disabilities To mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities, WHO is joining partners around the world to celebrate "A day for all". This theme reflects a growing understanding that disability is part of the human condition. WHO estimates that more than one billion people - about 15% of the world's population - experience some form of disability. This figure is predicted to rise given population ageing and an increase in the prevalence of noncommunicable diseases. Thursday, 3 December – Friday, 4 December Special Session of the General Assembly in Response to the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Pandemic The COVID-19 pandemic is not only the greatest global health crisis since the creation of the United Nations 75 years ago. It is also a humanitarian, socio-economic, security and human rights crisis. The special session provides an opportunity for the international community to assess and hone its collective response to this pandemic. WHO's Director-General is expected to speak at the Special Session Friday.
