As soon as the calendar flips to September, I welcome all the apple baking recipes that I can. Between apples coming into season locally, fresh apple cider appearing in the markets, and images of the shiny red fruit appearing in back-to-school ad campaigns, September and apples are intrinsically linked in my mind.
I originally published this recipe 11 years agoπ€― and have since added new photos, a few more success tips, and have given the option for homemade dough.
One reader said: "I finally got around to baking this and it was a fan favorite. Sweet and moist but not so sweet that it stopped us from having some for breakfast. You're right that it really needs no topping! Thanks for your easy and clear instructions. Glad to add something other than pumpkin bread to my fall baking arsenal! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"
One reader said: "I tend to favor fruit crisps over fruit pies; crisps are easier and I like the oat topping more than a pie crust. This crisp was absolutely delicious, cinnamony and tastes like Fall in a bowl. My husband favors pies and he LOVED this crisp. Highly recommend! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"
One reader said: "A dinner guest phrased it perfectly – light, not too sweet, the perfect amount of spice, and the apples really came through. We will definitely make this again. (Served with a dusting of powdered sugar instead of sauce) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"
One reader said: "Hands down best cinnamon buns I've ever made, and SO EASY. Followed the instructions as is, and they were absolutely moist, light and so gooey! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"
One reader said: "Pie Perfection!!! I'm an experienced baker, but apple pie has been my nemesis. Until now. Both the pie and salted caramel came out wonderfully. The apples were perfectly cooked – not mushy and not runny and just the right sweetness and spice. The dough was easy to work with and the lattice was beautiful! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"
One reader said: "This is my new favorite muffin recipe! It's PERFECT. First apple treat I've found where I can taste the actual apples, not just cinnamon or sugar. It was SO easy, and now I've applied the baking trick to other muffins. I love them! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"
One reader said: "I would give this more than 5 stars if I could! I love apple pie, but haven't found joy in the pie-making process yet. This recipe was perfect and much easier than making pie, especially with the salted caramel sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"
P.S. And this last one isn't a baking recipe, but my apple cider sangria is the best this time of year! I like using Honeycrisp apples. ππ
