| This Is Your Grandma's Rubber Jar Opener I have dry COVID-era hands and lately I've been trying to moisturize every time I wash them. The thick Nivea I use has definitely been helping to heal my skin from two years of nonstop sanitizer and antibacterial soap, but it's also making it hard for me to get a good grip on the lid of my favorite spicy condiment. Even with unmoisturized hands, we could all use help opening a particularly tightly-screwed-on pickle jar lid from time to time.
The simplest solution is a rubber jar opener—a floppy, round piece of textured rubber that forms a grippy barrier between your hand and an often-slippery metal lid. When I was growing up in the '80s and '90s, my grandma used hers almost daily, and nearly everyone I knew had at least one stashed in their kitchen junk drawer. Now, they aren't handed out free from your bank, so many modern kitchens don't seem to have them. But I'm here to make a case for intentionally buying a rubber jar opener. Read more about why I love them, and find a few linked directly below.
