Kevin Rudd: Australia’s China Policy Requires a ‘Realist Premise’

Australians voted for change on May 21 in a historic election that replaced almost a decade of conservative rule with Anthony Albanese and an Australian Labor Party-led government.

How will new leadership in Canberra impact China's influence in the region, including in the Solomon Islands? And what should Australia be doing to further its own security goals in the Pacific?

There is no one better placed to answer these questions than former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who spoke with Foreign Policy following the results of the election. The conversation was conducted for FP Live, Foreign Policy's forum for live journalism, on Thursday, May 19 and is available on-demand for all FP subscribers.

Looking for a front row seat to the discussions coming out of Davos?

On Wednesday, the third day of the World Economic Forum, Foreign Policy editor in chief Ravi Agrawal moderated a live session called "Return to War" with four top thinkers: Shangri-La Dialogue senior fellow Lynn Kuok, Harvard University professor Graham Allison, Human Rights Watch executive director Kenneth Roth, and King's College London professor Lawrence Freedman.

The panel discussed how, outside of Europe, the world has not been united in its response to Russia's war in Ukraine and talked about the implications of the conflict on geopolitics, with a particular emphasis on Europe, the United States, and China.

You can watch the recording alongside our summary of the discussion that included a heated debate about how the war in Ukraine could possibly end.
