Reflections on Memorial Day

Memorial Day is almost upon us. Many use this holiday to mark the beginning of our summer vacation season. But as we all know, Memorial Day is much more meaningful and special. On this national holiday, we honor all those who have died in American wars.

I suspect we have all been touched in some way by the painful reality of knowing someone or knowing of someone who died while serving in the armed forces. But along with the sorrow is deep appreciation for the brave souls who put their lives on the line for our nation. And there is the celebration of the life lived, despite it having been cut short.

I know all too well the suffering of life cut short by war. You see, I am a member of a Gold Star family. I lost my brother who served in the U.S. Army and was deployed in Vietnam. His last day on this earth was March 21, 1969, just months shy of his 21st birthday.

It's been more than a half a century since my brother Rene's passing. Yet every day, something triggers a memory of him. You see, my big brother helped me get to where I am in life.

So I thought I'd share some cuentitos (stories) in this blog to pay homage to my brother Rene and the many others who sacrificed their lives for us and our nation. Continue reading...

Internet For All - NTIA

Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) launched the Internet for All initiative, which will invest $45 billion to provide affordable, reliable, high-speed internet for everyone in America by the end of the decade.

The COVID-19 pandemic shed light on what many Americans already knew: access to the internet is a necessity for everyday life. The Internet for All effort will address fundamental economic, educational, social and health-related inequities in our country by connecting Americans and closing the digital divide.

The Census Bureau is committed to raising awareness about data, tools and resources available to help community groups and federal, state, and local governments identify underserved communities and equitably distribute resources.

Digital Equity Population Viewer Animation

Together with NTIA, we recently released the Digital Equity Act Population Viewer, an interactive collection of maps that highlight various demographics and broadband internet availability and adoption by state. These maps help policymakers plan and implement digital inclusion and equity programs under the Digital Equity Act of 2021. Learn more on America Counts.

Broad Diversity of Asian, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander Population

America Counts - AANHPI Heritage Month

There are 20.6 million people who identify as Asian, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander alone (not in combination with another race), making up 6.2% of the nation's population, according to the 2020 Census.

But it's not until these numbers are broken down that the incredible diversity of this population becomes clear.

Using recently released data from both the 2020 Census and the American Community Survey's (ACS) 5-year estimates, we detail the diversity of the racial and ethnic composition of this population and its geographic distribution. Visit America Counts to read more.
