U.S. immigration officials conducted "enhanced targeted operations" in North Texas, Austin, San Antonio, and the Rio Grande Valley on Sunday as part of a nationwide initiative to deport illegal immigrants following President Trump's inauguration last week.

The operations sparked protests in multiple jurisdictions. Demonstrators waved Mexican flags, chanted slogans, and carried signs reading, "Immigrants make America great" and "No one is illegal on stolen land."

Gov. Greg Abbott stated that Texas Department of Public Safety troopers were assisting federal law enforcement officials in "targeting and removing illegal immigrants," adding that the operations are "expected to expand in the coming days."

Across the country, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 956 illegal immigrants and requested custody of 554 more being detained.

Article Icon 1Texas A&M to Limit New Undergrad Enrollment

Texas A&M University announced a pause in undergraduate enrollment growth on its main campus for the next 5-7 years to address challenges arising from a 30% increase in the student body over the last decade.

The College Station campus will limit enrollment of new undergraduate students to 15,000 a year, expand the school's public transit system, provide more space for pedestrian traffic, and add more student housing. The university will also spend $3 million a year over the next five years on hiring more faculty.

Two studies conducted last year, which examined student experience and the university's capacity to increase enrollment, informed the decisions.

President Mark Welsh said that implementing the studies' recommendations would "position Texas A&M for continued leadership in higher education for decades to come."

Article Icon 1Jerry Jones: New Cowboys Head Coach a "Risk"

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones introduced the team's new head coach, Brian Schottenheimer, during a press event on Monday, acknowledging that hiring the longtime offensive coordinator with no head coaching experience is "as big a risk as you can take."

Fans and critics of the world's most valuable sports franchise have not been particularly impressed with the unorthodox hire, and Jones' remarks on Monday did nothing to quiet the criticism.

Former Dallas Cowboys star wide receiver Dez Bryant commented on social media that he doubted Jones is "all in" on winning. Fox Sports commentator Colin Cowherd remarked that "we are witnessing the fall of a great American institution."

Meanwhile, Schottenheimer—the son of longtime NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer—insisted that "we're going to win the championship."

He recounted calling his mother after being offered the job. "I'm going to get a chance to get what daddy didn't get: a Super Bowl. The first one will be for him."
