Why I haven't bought cooking spray in over 10 years

Hi reader,

There's always one line I skip when I'm reading recipes:

Coat with cooking spray

You see, I ditched cooking spray 5 years ago and haven't looked back.

Why did I quit using cooking spray?

How can I make recipes non-stick if I don't spray the pan?

What do I do instead of using cooking spray?

Butter wrappers.

Swapping butter wrappers for cooking spray was one of the first swaps I made when we transitioned to real food (among these other easy swaps), for two good reasons:

  • It was cheap
  • It was easy

Amidst all the conflicting and overwhelming health information, you gotta love cheap and easy, right?

I fully believe butter is a healthy fat, so anytime we finish a stick of butter, I fold the wrapper in half and put it in the fridge. When a recipe says to "coat with cooking spray," I pull out a wrapper and rub it on the pan.

I do the same thing if a recipe says to grease the pan. And when a baking recipe says to "grease and flour," I use the butter wrappers then too.

This small trick has saved me on average $3 each month (that's one can of cooking spray each month). It might not seem like much, but over the years it's saved me close to $200! And that's definitely nothing to scoff at!

Remember, the key to saving on groceries isn't the "big wins," it's the small things you do that add up to big savings over time.

Blessings!
