Primary Elections Today for Congressional Seats

Voters in the 1st and 6th congressional districts go to the polls today for a special primary election for representatives to replace Matt Gaetz and Michael Waltz.

President Trump backs state chief financial officer Jimmy Patronis in the 10-person Republican field in Gaetz's former 1st District, which includes Escambia, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa counties, and portions of Walton County.

Gay Valimont is unopposed for the Democratic nomination in the 1st District. She challenged Gaetz for the seat in November, getting 34% of the vote.

In Waltz's 6th District, Trump-endorsed state Rep. Randy Fine faces two other GOP candidates. George Selmont and Josh Weil are competing for the Democratic Party's nomination.

Lawmakers Upend DeSantis' Immigration Plans

The state House and Senate abruptly ended a special session called by Gov. Ron DeSantis to address illegal immigration and other issues, rebuking DeSantis by adjourning and immediately reconvening to file alternative legislation.

The move effectively killed legislation already filed by DeSantis' allies and allowed more lawmakers to draw up immigration proposals.

While DeSantis and GOP leaders remain aligned on many proposals, one where they may differ would add the title "chief immigration officer" to the state agricultural commissioner, stripping immigration enforcement from the governor's control.

Current state Agricultural Commissioner Wilton Simpson is eyeing a run for governor in 2026. DeSantis is term-limited from running again.

World Record Set for Underwater Photo Shoot

Working more than 160 feet below the water's surface, a photographer and model set a Guinness World Record for the deepest underwater photo shoot at a shipwreck off the coast of Boca Raton.

The photographer, Steve Haining, and the model, Ciara Antoski, staged a photo where Antoski is floating near the shipwreck, setting the record at a depth of 163.4 feet underwater.

The 15-minute shoot went beyond the no-decompression limit of scuba diving. The maximum depth for a dive master or deep specialist is 130 feet, but a technical or commercial diver can pass that limit with certification.

Antoski completed a year of training to become a technical diver, with a team from Isla Divers in Florida training her remotely and in person.
