Article Icon 1Property Tax Limits Meet Resistance

Many school districts and local governments are opting out of providing the property tax relief that Georgia voters approved in November, setting up a possible showdown in the Legislature.

Some state lawmakers threatened to introduce legislation mandating the "homestead exemption" tax breaks, while some taxpayers have voiced objections to local opt-outs.

The city of Savannah became one of the latest to opt out this week, citing research that found intricacies in the new law that could lead to higher tax bills for some residents.

Schools and local governments have described concerns about reduced funding, with the state's largest school district projecting $35 million less revenue per year under the law.

Article Icon 1No Escape from High Egg Prices

Georgia's ranking as one of the nation's top chicken and egg producers provides only a limited buffer against skyrocketing egg prices, a researcher said.

Across the state, shoppers are experiencing the same sticker shock as elsewhere in the country, with egg prices rising again this month to a national average of $6.33 per dozen.

Prices for most foods are up due to inflation, and Georgia's agriculture commissioner said egg costs are rising even faster because of ongoing bird flu outbreaks in dozens of states.

Semifinalists are recognized across 25 categories, including three new ones: Best New Bar, Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service, and Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service.

In the premier categories, Kimball House in Decatur was nominated for Outstanding Restaurant, and Casa Balam in Decatur was nominated for Best New Restaurant.

The semifinalist pool will be narrowed to finalists in April, and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on June 16 in Chicago.

A Special Note from Our CEO, Cole

Dear Flyover Readers,

I hope you enjoy The Georgia Flyover as much as we enjoy bringing it to you every morning. It's truly an honor to provide you with the news in a format that's easy to read, unbiased, and written with care.

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of bringing our entire national Flyover team together in one place. From 12 different states, our team of writers, editors, fact-checkers, proofreaders, developers, engineers, and more gathered to plan, strategize, and, most importantly, connect. We shared meals, laughed, and brainstormed ways to make The Georgia Flyover even better for you, our readers.

Our team works incredibly hard each day, sifting through hundreds of stories (so you don't have to) to deliver you the news that matters most. While many media companies are downsizing and losing viewers, The Flyover is doing something different. We're growing.

Today, we bring the news to 100,000 readers in Georgia every single morning, and as you know, The Georgia Flyover is and always will be 100% free of charge. I couldn't be more grateful to count you among our most loyal readers.

While advertisers provide a portion of our funding, we also rely on readers like you to keep The Georgia Flyover flying. Your support helps us maintain the team, tools, and resources that make our news publication possible.

If you've found value in The Georgia Flyover—if it's made your mornings better, kept you informed, or simply been a trusted source of news—I would greatly appreciate your financial support. Even a small contribution can go a long way in helping us continue to deliver the unbiased, trustworthy news you deserve.

Thank you for being part of our community. We couldn't do this without you.

Warm regards,
Cole
