Midair Collision, Virginia Jobs Report, and a Baby Owl

A regional passenger jet carrying about 60 people collided with a Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River last night at about 9 p.m.

A regional passenger jet carrying about 60 people collided with a Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River last night at about 9 p.m.

American Airlines Flight 5342 from Wichita, Kansas, was on final approach into Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington when the collision occurred. The airport immediately halted all takeoffs and landings

Multiple agencies launched a massive search effort, seeking to pull any survivors from the water as quickly as possible.

According to a spokesperson for President Donald Trump, drones sighted across the Commonwealth and other eastern states late last year were not a threat.

"After research and study, the drones flying over New Jersey in large numbers were authorized to be flown by the FAA for research and various other reasons," Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said. The same would seem to apply to drone flights spotted in Virginia.

The Virginia Fusion Center, a department of the state police department, received more than 150 tips about drone activity in December alone. Of those, 12 were assigned "for further follow-up," a spokesperson said.

The Commonwealth's facilities on the Healthgrades list also included St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax, Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, and Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth.
