Happy New Year! In many parts of the world legumes are eaten to usher in good luck for the new year. Here in the American South it's black eyed peas and where I'm from in Germany it's lentils that bring the good luck. Here are two of our family's favorite "lucky" dishes! |

Linsen mit Spätzle (German Lentils) |
One of my all-time favorite German comfort dishes, it's one that I grew up enjoying in the Stuttgart area of southern Germany. Made the way my Mutti and Oma made it in authentic Swabian fashion, the classic combination of vinegar and just a touch of sugar gives it its famous sweet-sour flavor balance. Coupled with smoky bacon and flavorful veggies, this dish is beloved throughout Germany. Included is my recipe for homemade German Spätzle noodles. |

Smoky Black Eyed Pea Soup |
Positively packed with flavor and loaded with wholesome ingredients, this hearty Southern black eyed pea soup is sure to become a favorite in your home. And whether or not it will actually bring good luck, one thing is certain: It's delicious and will warm both your tummy and soul! |
Rindergulasch (German Goulash) |
Another favorite in our home for Christmas Eve dinner is German goulash served with Kartoffelklösse (potato dumplings), Semmelknödel (bread dumplings) or Spätzle, and Rotkohl (braised red cabbage). I provide recipes for all of these favorite traditional sides along with my recipe for authentic German goulash. So hearty and so flavorful, this meal epitomizes the very best of German comfort food! |
