Canada: Canada Consults on Modernizing Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grade Standards

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has opened a consultation as part of their modernization of Canadian food quality standards. The consultation on grades and standards for fresh fruits and vegetables (FFV) will run from July 22 to October 20, 2024. CFIA is seeking stakeholder feedback to better understand how FFV grades are used in the marketplace, identify opportunities to reduce burdens on industry and support industry competitiveness, and to understand how altering and/or maintaining grades standards may affect stakeholders. CFIA is asking stakeholders to weigh in on three options for modernization: 1) an industry body will take over governance of FFV grades standards, 2) expand the mandate of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Dispute Resolution Council to develop and maintain FFV grades standards, or 3) CFIA maintains FFV grades standards but pivots to focus on an outcome-based approach.

On July 22, 2024, Canada's Competition Bureau launched consultations to inform the development of industry guidance for new greenwashing provisions under the Competition Act. The following is part of a series of reports prepared by the Agricultural Trade Offices (ATOs) in Monterrey and Mexico City, to provide background on local and regional markets of interest for current and prospective exporters of U.S. food and beverage products. This specific report highlights the Tijuana metropolitan area, one of the busiest ports of entry on the U.S.-Mexico border and one of Mexico's most populous cities. In addition to its central role in U.S.-Mexico trade, Tijuana is a dynamic gastronomic environment that claims the classic Caesar salad among its creations and in more recent years has become a hub of "Baja Med" cuisine.

Nicaragua: FAIRS Country Report Annual

This report describes Nicaraguan regulatory requirements and import procedures for food and agricultural products. As of June 2024, there had been no major changes to the regulatory regime since the 2023 report. However, the U.S. Government has observed Nicaraguan customs authorities more frequently challenging the origin of U.S. products, which could result in unpaid duties and fines if customs authorities deny the products duty free access under the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement, further complicating an already challenging trade landscape. U.S. exporters should have very clear conversations with their trading partners prior to shipping products to Nicaragua.

Nicaragua: FAIRS Export Certificate Report Annual

This report provides information on export certification requirements for U.S. food and agricultural exports to Nicaragua. There were no significant changes to required export certificates since the 2023 report. This report supplements the 2024 Food and Agricultural Import Regulations and Standards (FAIRS) Country Report.

The Ministry of Health announced 234 health claims which may be used on the labels, presentation, and advertising of foods and food supplements.
