My Middle-Class Fancy Kitchen Upgrades |
Earlier this year, my colleague Megan asked Epi and BA staffers to test a handful of Simplehuman products to determine which ones were worth the splurge. I ended up with what felt like the short straw at the time: A stainless steel cabinet organizer that, when installed, gives the illusion of having actually-nice cabinetry with pull-out shelves. I was in the middle of a move and didn't know how I'd use the drawer-like rack in my apartment kitchen, or if I even wanted to. But as I unpacked everything necessary to feed three humans and one 100-pound rescue mutt, I realized there was no available floor space for the dog food—which had always lived in a plastic tub near the bowls. There was, however, room in one of my lower cabinets, so I installed the organizer (just four simple screws) and transferred his kibble to a taller, slimmer tub. It turned out to be a perfect solution; a former eyesore is tucked out of sight and the sliding rail makes it easy for my kids to keep up with feeding their fur brother.
After a few weeks of having the pet food so accessible, I got annoyed by how inaccessible everything else in my wide, deep lower cabinets seemed to be. I considered buying a cheaper version, but most had multiple customer reviews complaining of durability issues or sticky sliders. Since the Simplehuman organizer felt so sturdy and smooth, I was happy to spend a little more on a second. Soon enough, I was annoyed when I had to walk around a corner to access my Kohler step can (especially while cooking) and now my trash and recycling are under the counter on a Simplehuman slide-out too.
