One in Six Older Americans Received Needs-Based Assistance Even Before Pandemic

The vast majority of the nation's 54 million adults ages 65 and over participate in Social Security (86%) and Medicare (93%) — social insurance programs designed to provide nearly-universal coverage of the older population.

But what happens when these social insurance benefits, along with retirement payments and savings, are not enough? What about those not eligible for Social Security or Medicare?

They rely on needs-based assistance that support people with limited resources.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 1 in 6 older adults participated in a wide range of needs-based assistance programs, according to an analysis of recently released data from the Census Bureau's Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP).

Survey of Income and Program Participation Data Release

The Census Bureau released data from the 2020 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). The data are accompanied by supporting materials such as metadata, a codebook and an updated users' guide. The Census Bureau plans to release research briefs highlighting various social and economic in the coming months.

Census Bureau Releases New Data on Minority-Owned, Veteran-Owned and Women-Owned Businesses

The Census Bureau released new estimates on the characteristics of employer businesses. According to the 2020 Annual Business Survey (ABS), which covers reference year 2019, approximately 18.7% (1.1 million) of U.S. employer businesses were minority-owned, veteran-owned businesses made up about 5.7% (331,151) of all businesses. About 20.9% (1.2 million) of businesses were owned by women.

Six States Added to Post-Secondary Employment Outcomes

The Census Bureau announced the release of new states in the Post-Secondary Employment Outcomes (PSEO) experimental data product: Alabama, Arizona, Iowa, Missouri, Utah, and Virginia. PSEO now includes data on 534 institutions, which cover approximately 21% of all college graduates in the United States in 2015. Data users can use the PSEO Explorer tool, download raw files or query the Census API to access data.
