Monday, 8 March International Women's Day This year, International Women's Day celebrates ‘Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world’. WHO will join forces with partners to recognize the role of women leaders in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic- including the groundbreaking role of women in science - and delivering health and social care. During the day, WHO will release a new Compendium on Women in Science, aiming to help inspire and invigorate scientific career pathways, compiled by TDR, the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases. WHO introduces new global breast cancer initiative A major new collaborative effort, the Global Breast Cancer Initiative, will be introduced by WHO on International Women’s Day with the objective of reducing global breast cancer mortality by 2.5% per year until 2040, thereby averting an estimated 2.5 million deaths. Breast cancer survival five years after diagnosis now exceeds 80% in most high-income countries, compared with 66% in India and just 40% in South Africa. Through the Initiative, WHO, working in unison with other UN agencies and partner organizations, will provide guidance to governments on how to strengthen systems for diagnosing and treating breast cancer, which in turn is expected to lead to improved capacities to manage other types of cancer. Interviews and more available on request. Tuesday, 9 March Violence Against Women estimates Violence against women is a major human rights violation and a global public health concern. This report - the largest ever study on the prevalence of violence against women - provides updated estimates for violence by an intimate male partner and non-partner sexual violence. The estimates are based on population-based prevalence data for women aged 15 years and older for the period 2000–2018. The report will be launched at a special press conference from 415-5pm CET featuring WHO's Director-General and UN Women's Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. Wednesday, 10 March A new WHO report, Tobacco Control To Improve Child Health And Development, launching Wednesday calls for raising awareness among practitioners and policymakers about the importance of strong tobacco control measures for protecting the health and development of children, including banning tobacco advertising, implementing 100% smoke-free environments and raising taxes on tobacco. Exposure of unborn children to maternal smoking or second-hand smoke is linked to birth defects, stillbirths, preterm births and infant deaths. Maternal smoking during pregnancy is linked to a doubling of the risk of sudden infant death and birth defects, while exposure to second-hand smoke during pregnancy is linked to a 23% increased risk of stillbirth and 13% increased risk of congenital malformation.
