Small Business Pulse Survey Updates

Based on responses collected February 22 through February 28, the Small Business Pulse Survey estimates that:

  • 18.2% of U.S. small businesses experienced a decrease in total number of hours worked by paid employees. For responses collected 2/15 – 2/21, it was 19.2%

  • 32.1% of U.S. small businesses have experienced a decrease in operating revenues/sales/receipts in the last week

  • 8.6% of U.S. small businesses experienced a decrease in the number of paid employees in the last week

  • 21.5% of U.S. small businesses have postponed planned capital expenditures for 2020 since March 13, 2020

  • 22.6% of U.S. small businesses believe they will need to obtain financial assistance or additional capital in the next 6 months

  • 44.5% of U.S. small businesses believe more than 6 months will pass before their business returns to its normal level of operations

  • 12.9% of U.S. healthcare and social assistance businesses required their employees to test negative for COVID-19 before coming to work in the last week

  • 42.6% of small businesses in the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area have experienced a large negative effect from the coronavirus pandemic
