Mar 11, 2021 No. 23 We can smell spring from here and it feels positively euphoric, after this long winter of screen time and quarantine. Fun times are around the corner, like Pi Day this very Sunday (3.14) — what a great excuse to astonish our kids with homemade Pop-Tarts or these little pies that look like flowers (but are totally doable).
Monica Chavez is a mother, blogger, and DIY expert whose Instagram account offers a steady, stunning stream of creative projects and inspiration. She lives in the Bay Area with her family, including a new baby who arrived during this strange year. "I've got a Covid baby!" she laughs. "She's seven months old. It's just so weird because she doesn't see a lot of people; we don't go anywhere!" But for Monica's children, going elsewhere may be overrated when you have a home like this. Over the four years they've lived in their 3000-square-foot suburban home, Monica has used her design savvy and building expertise to create spaces that delight the whole family.
We talked with Monica about the ah-ha moment that led to an incredible under-stair surprise, her favorite function-meets-beauty detail of her home, and (of course) about the magical two-story library in her family room. cubby follows Ever follow someone whose recommendations you trust implicitly? The books are Richard Branson's two autobiographies, which track his life from childhood to when he became a "Grand Dude,"as he likes to say, with grandchildren.
What I learned was astounding and I couldn't put the books down.
My big takeaways? He's had a remarkable life — both lucky and well chosen — but what really kept coming back into my head was, "He had really good parents." Maxwell Ryan is a father and was an elementary school teacher in NYC before founding Apartment Therapy. He'd love to answer your question: askmaxwell@cubbyathome.com
