The following Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) reports were released on Thursday, March 4, 2021.
Brazil: The Brazilian Bovine Genetics Market and US Exports Bovine semen exports from the United States to Brazil reached a record in 2020, and expectations are that 2021 could be another record year. Brazil is the second largest market for U.S. bovine genetics. Demand for artificial insemination (AI) and high quality genetics in Brazil is growing by double digits each year, with the cattle sector leading the growth. In recent years, Post has increased marketing efforts in the area of bovine genetics and is working to address barriers to trade.
Post forecasts that the cattle herd will grow at three percent in 2021, and beef production is also forecast to increase three percent, reaching 10.4 million tons Carcass Weight Equivalent (CWE). Post forecasts beef consumption for 2021 at 7.725 million tons (CWE), which is a one percent increase from 2020. Post forecasts a two percent increase in the pig crop and three percent growth in domestic pork consumption. Pork production growth is forecast at three percent in 2021, reaching 4.25 million tons (CWE). Pork export are forecast to increase four percent in 2021. The Post cattle forecasts account for poor pasture conditions in the second half of 2020 due to an extended drought and the expectation of lower rainfall in the first quarter of 2021. Higher prices of animal feed for both cattle and swine are expected because of a spike in corn and soybean meal costs. High global meat demand, and a devalued Real support the forecast record exports, specially to China.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a review of specific sections of the Seeds Regulations. The review includes the Seed and Seed Potato Regulation Modernization Survey which is open January 28-March 15. Farmers, seed industries, producer groups, commodity/value chain associations, breeders, government organizations, and other special interest groups are encouraged to participate in the survey.
On February 21, 2021, China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) notified the U.S. Embassy in Beijing that on February 4, 2021, China detected highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N8 subtype in wild birds in a scenic area in Lianyungang City. China also notified this HPAI outbreak to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and is monitoring the situation.
The Mexican cotton sector is facing a myriad of challenges, resulting in significant impacts to production in marketing year 2020/21, while COVID-19 demand reductions and supply chain impacts in the textile industry are likely to continue through 2021. Seeds shortages due to lack of genetically engineered (GE) seed approvals persist, and a glyphosate import ban is likely to affect pest protection in the near future, as existing stocks are dwindling down. Additionally, electricity cuts are affecting irrigation machinery and access to water for producers in Chihuahua State, the country's largest producer. Reductions in production are likely to be fully recovered by domestic supply stocks, as lowered global and domestic textile demand has relieved pressure for imports.
Post forecasts Tunisia's MY 2021/22 soybean imports to reach 640,000 MT, compared to 615,000 MT in MY 2020/21, while at the same time, olive oil exports are forecast to reach 220,000 MT in MY 2021/22, compared to 110,000 MT in MY 2020/21.
In 2021 Ukraine's chicken meat production and exports are expected to decline for the first time in five years. The end of the major expansion cycle of Ukraine's biggest chicken producer - PrJSC MHP, growing feed cost leading to slimmer margins, the bankruptcy of the country's second largest chicken producer, and multiple High Pathogenic Avian Flu (HPAI) outbreaks are all contributing factors hindering Ukrainian poultry exports. Although, Ukraine's exports are expected to remain significant and diversified, similar to 2020, HPAI outbreaks will prevent it from fulfilling the EU 2021 import quota. In 2021, Ukraine will continue to import cheap offal and export premium cuts and whole birds. In order to meet the increasing demand from processors for cheap chicken meat for processing, Ukrainian imports are expected to grow to compensate for the declining production.
