| Schools Chief Backs Trump's Plan Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne said he will "throw a party" if the U.S. Department of Education closes and funding control is given to the states. Watch. Horne's comments aren't his first in support of President Trump's call to disband the federal agency. In February, he said of the agency, "They don't really do anything for us." Horne says money saved by eliminating federal bureaucracy should go toward raising teacher salaries. The change wouldn't harm programs such as Title I and Pell Grants, he said. Marisol Garcia, president of the Arizona Education Association, said recently that closing the federal agency could put thousands of jobs at risk. | Coatimundi Attacks Hiker A hiker reported he was attacked by a coatimundi after he returned from a hike in Ash Canyon and found the raccoon-like animal on the hood of his car. The hiker received a rabies vaccine from a nearby hospital. The coatimundi was not found during a search. Coatimundis, also known as coatis, are rarely seen. Weeks earlier, multiple encounters with rabid gray foxes were reported in the same area. | Phoenix Sets Heat Record A daily heat record that stood for 35 years in Phoenix was toppled on Monday when temperatures reached 96 degrees.
