| 'Quad-Demic' Surge Impacts Hospital Visitation The Duke University Health System and several UNC Health facilities are temporarily limiting patient visitations due to a spike in four respiratory illnesses being referred to as a "quad-demic." Cases of flu, COVID, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and Norovirus are increasing nationwide—flu and RSV in particular in North Carolina. The surge started during the Christmas break when families gathered to celebrate. Duke University Health System began age-based restrictions Jan. 6, allowing only visitors ages 12 and older with no signs of cold or flu symptoms. UNC Health and UNC Hospitals are prohibiting visits from anyone under age 11 and/or experiencing respiratory symptoms as of Jan. 6, with the exception of UNC Health Rex in Holly Springs and Raleigh, which will begin limiting visits tomorrow, Jan. 8. Under these temporary restrictions, patients can't receive more than two visitors at once. | Winter Weather Strikes as New Storm Looms Monday's winter weather canceled 96 flights and delayed another 263 at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, as of 2 p.m. yesterday. The wintry precipitation dropped snow in the mountains and cold rain elsewhere in North Carolina and created the potential for ice and dangerous road conditions, prompting weather alerts and the closure of schools and government agencies in multiple counties. WRAL of the Triangle shared viewer photos showing dustings of snow in areas impacted by the storm. Another winter storm is likely to move toward eastern portions of the U.S. on Friday and Saturday that will deliver lows in the teens and 20s, and highs in the 30s and 40s. The closer the storm rides to the East Coast, the higher North Carolina's chances of snow. The new members attended the official certification of President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance as winners of the 2024 presidential election Monday, bearing witness to North Carolina's 16 electoral votes going to Trump and Vance. NCGOP Chairman Jason Simmons said he believes each new representative "will serve with distinction and honor to get our economy back on track, secure the Southern border, and make Americans safe once again."
