| U.S. House Passes Laken Riley Act A bill that allows states to sue the government for illegal immigration harms became the first piece of major legislation passed by the U.S. House this year. The Laken Riley Act, named after a nursing student in Georgia killed by an illegal immigrant while she was out jogging, received bipartisan support and heads to the Senate for consideration. The bill also requires federal authorities to detain and deport illegal immigrants found guilty of lower-level crimes. Riley's killer was on parole for theft at the time of her murder. U.S. Rep. Mike Collins, R-Jackson, who introduced the bill, thanked his House colleagues and urged Senate members "to work together" to pass the measure. | Navy Flyover To Mark Carter's Memorial The U.S. Navy will conduct a "missing man" flyover around 5:20 p.m. Thursday in the skies above Plains in tribute to the late Jimmy Carter, a Navy veteran. The flyover will coincide with the return of Carter's body to his home from Washington, D.C., after the National Funeral Service at the Washington National Cathedral, which starts at 10 a.m. Thursday. The first part of Georgia's public remembrances of the 39th president ended Tuesday, with more than 23,000 people attending the public visitation at the Carter Center. In the morning, Carter's body was taken by motorcade to Dobbins Air Reserve Base and flown to Washington, D.C., where public visitations resumed after a service in the Capitol Rotunda. | State GOP Ousts Duncan Geoff Duncan has been expelled from the Georgia Republican Party, with the party's executive committee saying he worked to undermine the party and President-elect Donald Trump. One of Duncan's actions that drew GOP scorn was his support of Vice President Kamala Harris in her presidential bid. Duncan's ouster means he cannot run for public office as a Republican and is banned from state GOP events.
Duncan, 49, of Cumming, responded in a social media post that the party's time would be better spent on addressing legislative issues. | |
