Ready Or Not, Winter Is Coming

Gov. Greg Abbott has activated state emergency resources in anticipation of snow, freezing rain, and ice that Winter Storm Blair will bring to much of Texas over the next few days.

Up to an inch of snow is expected in parts of the Panhandle and West Texas today, while Dallas and Fort Worth could receive between 3 and 6 inches tomorrow and Friday. Austin, San Antonio, and the Hill Country could get freezing rain and sleet beginning tomorrow evening.

The forecast has caused prices for this weekend's Cotton Bowl matchup between UT and Ohio State to plummet, with the cheapest tickets dropping from about $500 to around a third of that price. The cold weather didn't keep fans from tailgating during Monday's FCS Championship Game in Frisco between North Dakota State and Montana State, however.

Some Texans who lived through the worst of Winter Storm Uri in 2021—which caused prolonged blackouts, burst pipes, and water outages across the state—have been triggered by the cold snap, expressing their distaste for winter on social media.

Others have poked fun at the perceived overreaction. "It's cold, not the end of the world, Texans. We will get through this cold front. Just stay safe and warm. And pray the grid doesn't shut down," a Reddit user posted.

SMU Hires President of UT

University of Texas at Austin President Jay Hartzell has been named the next president of Southern Methodist University following a unanimous vote by SMU's Board of Trustees on Tuesday.

R. Gerald Turner, SMU's current president, announced his retirement in August after a 30-year tenure marked by the establishment of the George W. Bush Presidential Center and the school's transition to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Hartzell has led UT since 2020, guiding the school through the challenges of the COVID pandemic, the state-mandated elimination of DEI programs at public universities, and the pro-Palestinian protests that rocked campuses across the country last spring.

In a statement released by SMU, Hartzell said he was "honored to serve as the next president of an exceptional institution like SMU in one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing cities in the nation, and excited to see how I can make the greatest impact as a leader."

2,300 Personalized License Plate Requests Rejected

A North Texas TV station obtained a list of the over 2,300 personalized license plate requests rejected by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles last year for being deemed obscene, derogatory, or objectionable.

Some of the "best of the worst," as the station put it, include "CKNBUTT," "EV SUCKS," and "R3DNCK," joining 2023 rejectees "UR2SLOO," "SRRY KRN," and "JOMAMMA." The department also rejected "H4WKTUA" and 81 other submissions related to that meme.

Texans can personalize license plates for a fee between $50 to $570, but they should know their submissions will be scrupulously reviewed by TxDMV personnel to ensure they adhere to agency guidelines.
