State officials released the names of 104 confirmed fatalities related to Hurricane Helene on Monday. The majority of deaths involved residents of Buncombe County.

The list doesn’t name victims who lived in North Carolina but were recovered in another state, such as those killed in landslides and discovered in Tennessee during search and rescue efforts.

Also excluded are those still missing or presumed dead, a number thought to be fewer than a dozen.

The list comes over three months after the storm hit. Prior to its release, news outlets had to rely on individual reports from family and friends to determine who had died.

President Joe Biden permanently banned oil and natural gas leasing off the North Carolina coast Monday as part of an effort to prevent offshore fossil fuel development.

Biden withdrew a total of 625 million acres that included federal waters off the entire East Coast, the eastern Gulf of Mexico off Florida and part of Alabama, and the Pacific coast from California to Washington. It was the largest such action in U.S. history.

Biden's ban made permanent temporary protections off the North Carolina coast put in place by then-President Donald Trump prior to the 2020 election. At that time, Trump expanded existing protections and maintained a moratorium on new offshore drilling leases.

During a live press conference Tuesday at Mar-a-Lago, Trump denounced Biden’s ban and vowed to “reverse it immediately” upon taking office.

Article Icon 1Court Sends Case to State, Board Appeals

U.S. Chief District Judge Richard Myers sent Republican state Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin’s Nov. 5 election complaint back to the North Carolina Supreme Court Monday.

However, on Tuesday, the N.C. State Board of Elections asked a federal Appeals Court to order Myers to take the case back.

The case currently sits with the North Carolina Supreme Court, which blocked certification of the election via a temporary stay Tuesday after Myers’ ruling paved the way for the 5-1 decision.

Griffin seeks to throw out 60,000 ballots based on concerns about how the voters who cast those ballots were registered.

If those ballots are excluded, it could change the vote count enough to put Griffin ahead of Democratic incumbent Allison Riggs, who currently maintains a slight lead.
