There's something about a new year that feels like a fresh start. In some ways, it's fun. I'm cleaning closets and organizing the spice cabinet. (Yes, I'm weird and find those activities fun.) In other ways, it's stressful, thanks to alllll the ads and advice centered around weight loss. So I'm sending you an annual pep talk--which, believe me, I need too. First, I will never judge you for thinking about your weight. Or not thinking about it. That's your business. Weight gain, especially after age 40, can be aggravating. Shopping for all new pants is expensive! Believe me, I've felt it too. Read: My Post-40 Weight Gain Frustrations. I'm a child of the 70s and 80s, when we were shamed for simply being able to "pinch an inch" around our midsections. So unfortunately I'm no stranger to dieting. But a few years ago, I hit a personal rock bottom in that department when I tried a restrictive, low-carb diet. I learned a lot from it and vowed never to "diet" again. It took me a few years to write about this because frankly, I was embarrassed. But I hope that sharing it might help someone else, especially right now when so many people are thinking about food and weight. Read: I Went On a Diet. Here's What Happened. And if you want more perspective, here are some powerful words my friend wrote about her weight after her mother passed away. Read: Life Is Too Short To Worry About a Muffin Top. Wishing you a happy, healthy 2025! Warmly, Sally ps: I've started a separate email list for those of you who want a little more, including weekly dinner menus, curated articles I think you'll love, recommendations for books and other life things, plus behind-the-scenes stuff and first dibs on anything fun and new. It's a VIRM (aka Very Important Read Moms) list of sorts of sorts. You can sign up for that here. ✨ |
