Click here Friday, 08 November 2024 | Issue 279 WHO / Lindsay Mackenzie 11 to 22 November 2024 WHO at COP29 The World Health Organization (WHO) will be at the 29th United Nations annual climate conference (COP29), in Baku, Azerbaijan to promote health argument for bold, ambitious and urgent climate action. COP29 Health Pavilion (Blue Zone, Baku Stadium), hosted by WHO in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust and the health community, will once again offer a rich two-week programme of events to showcase evidence, initiatives and solutions to maximize the health benefits of tackling climate change across regions, sectors and communities. All COP29 Health Pavilion events will be livestreamed and open to the media to join. The COP29 Presidency is working closely with WHO and other partners on a number of health-related initiatives. Also see the WHO investment case outlining the economic benefit of climate and health action, All for Health, Health for All Tuesday, 12 November Joint WHO/UNICEF/Lancet Countdown press conference at COP29 Baku (Azerbaijan), 14.00 AST/11.00 CET/10.00 GMT This joint WHO/UNICEF/Lancet Countdown press conference will be held at the UNFCCC Media Centre in Baku. This is an in-person conference for COP29-accredited journalists, which will also be livestreamed on UNFCCC channels. Speakers: Dr Maria Neira, Director of the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health, WHO; Abheet Solomon, Senior Advisor, Environment, UNICEF; and Maria Walawender, Climate Change and Health Research Fellow, Lancet Countdown.
COP29 WHO/UNICEF high-level event: The health argument for climate action, focusing on maternal, newborn, and child health 16.45 AST/13.45 CET/12.45 GMT, Room SE4, COP29 Blue Zone on 12 November WHO's Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and UNICEF's Deputy Executive Director Kitty van der Heijden will be hosting a dialogue along with leaders from government, public and private sectors. They will explore the health argument for climate action focusing on mothers, newborn infants and children. This in-person event is open to journalists with a valid Blue Zone accreditation. Thursday, 14 November Release of the joint WHO and CDC estimates on measles cases and deaths 13.00 EST/19.00 CET on 14 November On 14 November, the WHO and the U.S. Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) will release the latest global and regional estimates on measles cases and deaths in the joint publication, Progress Toward Regional Measles Elimination — Worldwide, 2000–2023. The estimates will be published within the WHO Weekly Epidemiological Record and in CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The new publication will provide an assessment of how well countries and regions, with support from the Measles & Rubella Partnership (M&RP), are doing in reaching measles elimination targets set by the Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030). An embargoed virtual press briefing with WHO and CDC experts is scheduled for 14 November. A media advisory with additional information and dial-in details will be sent later. Friday, 15 November Closing plenary of the Twelfth meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (NB) The Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) for a WHO instrument on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response is holding its twelfth meeting in Geneva and online (hybrid format) from 04 to 15 November 2024. The closing plenary, scheduled to take place on 15 November, will be webcast. Sunday, 17 November Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action 2024 In 2020, for the first time ever, 194 countries resolved to eliminate a cancer when WHO launched the Global strategy to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem, including a global Day of Action for Cervical Cancer Elimination. This 17 November, we mark four years of the global movement to eliminate cervical cancer and rally voices from around the world to recognize the contributions of frontline health workers who provide lifesaving services to eliminate cervical cancer.
