Good morning! On this day in 2016, Republican Donald Trump was elected 45th President of the United States, defeating Democrat Hillary Clinton with an Electoral College victory of 304-227. North Carolina contributed 15 electoral votes to Trump's win. Since then, the Tar Heel state has gained a 16th electoral vote due to population increases.

President-elect Donald Trump is on his way to accumulating a similar number of electoral votes for his second win, but vote counting continues, and control of the U.S. House is still up for grabs. Control of the N.C. House, however, has been finalized. Learn more in Top Stories.

NC Republicans Just Short of Supermajority

N.C. House Republicans have retaken control of the General Assembly, but they'll likely fall one seat short of the 72 required for a supermajority, making it more difficult to override the governor's vetoes.

Republican Destin Hall—expected to serve as House Speaker—says while his party needs to retain a 72-48 composition to account for three-fifths control and, thus, a supermajority, "it doesn't have to be 72 Republicans."

Democrats are hopeful the seat shortage will give incoming Democratic Gov. Josh Stein and his party more influence.

Meanwhile, in the U.S. House of Representatives, all 435 seats were up for election this year, with 218 needed to control the House. As of Thursday afternoon, Republicans had secured 211 seats and Democrats had 199.

Shots Fired at Random Cars on I-40

Six vehicles have been shot along a stretch of I-40 in Raleigh traveled by 120,000 vehicles per day.

Raleigh Police began investigating the shootings after a woman was shot in the leg while traveling along that section of the highway. Shortly after, other drivers reported their vehicles were also hit by gunfire in the same area.

The shootings occurred near the Chapel Hill Road exit, with one near the Buck Jones Road exit. Police believe the shootings are connected.

A seventh vehicle was shot at Thursday morning near the 1400 block of Trailwood Drive, north of I-40. Police have not yet linked this incident to the other shootings.
